Nannette:

Ways & Means:

A "Penny Social". Would it be a consideration for ICES to use the Century Club prizes in another manner such as a Penny Social "try out" for one year? You could still have the Century Club, but maybe just have the main big prizes. And, some of the lesser priced item.

If there was to be an auction, has there been consideration of a "pound item" been thought about? Every item would been gifted wrapped and must be "one pound".

An ICES convention address book with the logo on the cover. It could be generic so that the books can be sold from year-to-year without the value depreciating due to the year on the address book's cover which indicates a particular year of convention.

Publicity:

The goal of the organization is to promote the art of cake decorating. Keeping this in mind, are the members expectations of the organization being met - the personal, cake decorating needs. This might be a reason of decline in membership. Our we reaching and satisfying our target market? I think we have some very good practices and offerings. However, I think expansion of what ICES has to offer is now becoming apparently imperative. Expectations and involvement of sharing of cake decorating are met in some areas, but is this available in all areas (geographically)? We need to explore what else can be done or done differently yet not lose the positive, beneficial and productive activities that we now have and offer that is very effective in promoting the art of cake decorating.

The web site: Honestly? It needs a new dress. Our organization represents a beautiful art, and we see all that at convention. The web site definately needs to depict this and show this. Our organization is composed of extremely talented people who are incredibly artistic. The web site should indicate and show this in its look and content. Does the web site say, "Come join us"? Not just in words, but in a strong subliminal message. The subliminal is usually much more powerful and effective than the actual words. And, if one does join, does the wording say what one will get to benefit that person? And, how is this indicated? Is the way the message is coming across on the web site for advertising effective for promoting the art and enticing cake decorators to join? In what ways is it not, and what can we do? And, in what ways is it and what can we enhance?

How about a committe that consists of not only 3 board members, but members of ICES who have the talents, business knowledge and marketing knowledge to enhance our organizational growth and retain a larger percentage of its members.

A brain storm session was held about 7 years ago at a convention in the President's room. Many productive benefits occurred within our organization as a result. Perhaps it is time for another brain storm session. At midyear? Or at days of sharing?

I hope my wording has created some thoughts in the minds of those who read this. So, Nannettee, perhaps you will get some valuable feedback and ideas.

Sweet wishes with thoughts of ICES and its members,
Diane Shavkin

I don't know how far southeast you are, but they have them in Quincy IL
at John Wood Community College and at JoAnn's Fabric. They usually have
fall and spring classes. There is a phone # for Wilton where you can
call and they will tell you the closest place that has classes. You
might try calling the college in Keokuk or Burlington, they might have
them. Or just ask wherever they sale Wilton items, they might sponser
a class. Mindy

have tea . this was my 3rd convention and i forgot all the people from
england drank it instead of coffie) glad to know kansas will have
plenty.
I would like to hear from people on how the food was for our

I live in the Northern Virginia area and I am interested in finding
someone to teach me the wedding cake biz. I am just starting out and
would love to "apprentice" maybe 3-4 weekends just to get a feel for it.
Would certainly be willing to pay for my "teacher"'s time. I
have taken classes, and I have been decorating for years, but I
can't find the intense, hands-on training I am looking for. Anyone
interested? Thanks, Robin

Congrats on your new position. It looks like a tuff one. for the
publisity doing the internet is one, but for best publisity is too
offer other orgs. your time also(this goes to others also ) i worked
with a local padgent in my state. I donated several cakes for the after
party and they gave me business size space free. with that i used this
1998 convention for Mn ices show instead of my business name. it was
free advertisment to over 500 people. When i was working for another
event doing the stage I had too get supplys donated. I also was given
the ok for them to get a free business card space in replace of the
donation. wich i think ICES should do the same for there souvenior book.
when I had to get donation for the convintion this yrs vendors i had
nothing to offer them. a free space means a bigger group next yr.
you may also do what i am doing this yr with my local cake show.
i am sending a letter to all local bakerys and votechs for future
competiors. you may also think about taking out a small add in that
newpaper that is world wide not a local one. you will know the paper
when you see it usa today paper i think. well there you have it good
luck it is a hard job.

By now you should have received your Missouri Day of Sharing Invitation newsletter if you are on the membership list. If you aren't and would like to come, I think there is still room and time to get your registration in. It is in Columbia, Missouri September 27 and 28. If you need more information, please e-mail me and I will put you in contact with the ones in charge of it for that weekend. Lots of demos by several from out of state - Geraldine Randlesome of Canada, Elizabeth Frys of Texas and a couple of gals from Wisconsin whose names I don't remember plus demos from some of our talented Missouri decorators.
My e-mail is: Bridal1@AOL.Com

We would also welcome any out of state cake decorators who would like to join us!!

Robin, we've got lots of great teachers in the northern Virginia area.
I'd suggest that you post your request on the CASANoVa (Cake and Sugar
Artists of Northern Virginia) message board. CASANoVa's web address
is: www.wizard.net/~casanova/ Also, look on the web site for
information about our meetings that are held in Annandale. We always
have great demonstrations, and there are lots of opportunities for
networking with other cake decorators. We'd love to have you join us.
Another cake club in the area is the Greater Washington Area Cake Club
(GWACC). It meets right over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Clinton, MD,
adjacent to Andrews Air Force Base. A lot of CASANoVa members also go
to GWACC. Our next meeting is next Monday, September 14 at 7 p.m. If
you would like more information about that meeting--and perhaps I could
offer or find you a ride--just send me an e-mail.
